Blåhals, Skovhornugle, Hortulan og Lille Fluesnapper

Hi folks!

I hope you all had an incredible week!

We started the day by splitting up, like usual. Mikkel and Rasmus opened the nets, Jonas went observing with DOFung people at Verdens Ende 1. Laima, Amanda (who is part of DOFung and Blåvand Fuglestation), and I joined ringing for the first round. Birte went for an early morning swim, while Hans came to join us.

We caught a Bluethroat (Blåhals) on the first round which Rasmus got to ring which was super exciting! Also from DOFung, Sarah and Rasmus Momme, who is at Blåvand this spring, joined us for part of the ringing.

At some point during the rounds, Simon got a call from Rasmus, saying that he had a Long-eared Owl (Skovhornugle) in the net. Laima went to extract it and Mikkel got to ring it. Second ever owl for the station!

We weren't catching very many birds, but the morning was already great with those two birds! A bit later on, Rasmus got a call from Simon telling him that there was a Sparrowhawk (Spurvehøg) in the net. Both him and I ran and got there in time: it was still in the net! And soon after that, I got to ring it which is a first for me. :D (a side note to Anders: everything went well; no fainting involved :P)

Another great highlight of the morning was a light morph Arctic Skua (Almindelig Kjove) flying low above Kabeltromlen which gave a great view of this incredible bird.

On his side, Michael Ancher caught an Icterine Warbler (Gulbug) at Jennes Sø! :)

A thunderstorm broke out soon after all the excitement, so we decided to close the nets and head back home which was unfortunate for Hans as he had a tour at 10 am. Fortunately, though, the rain had stopped 5 minutes earlier, so he could show them around the ringing sites and had to talk about the ringing, without any happening.

In the meantime, we all napped for a while before the Ortolan Bunting (Hortulan) was called at the Grenen campsite. We all went and managed to see it, as well as a Red-breasted Flycatcher (Lille Fluesnapper). I guess the expression "hitting two birds with one stone" applies here! I have to say, the number of birders trying to find the bunting was very impressive.

In the afternoon, Jonas hung out with his high school friends that came to visit him. They went fishing and swimming; Mikkel napped again and then went to Kap Gadagung; Laima worked on her project; Rasmus went birding with his dad; Hans and Birte saw the Golden Eagle (Kongeørn) went for a walk with one of their friends; I had another nap and entered some data.

Esben arrived after walking from the train station with a very big backpack and a hand net because ours got stolen along with the tent and the whoosh net earlier in the season. We all had a great dinner that Hans and Birte cooked, and are now preparing for tomorrow which looks unfortunately rainy, but we are hoping the forecast changes especially since Amanda and Rasmus should also join us ringing. :)
