The long distance migrants arrive!
This morning it was so windy that Tue was even worried about the stability of the lighthouse ;)
But Andrew and Olli braved the wind and went out to do the morning obs. Because of the wind they went to the seal bunker. There were many migrating Fulmars (Mallemuk) today. They counted 211 of them in two hours. A highlight was a Great Northern Diver (Islom). They had an interesting observation of a Hobby (Lærkefalk) who came in from the sea because it was too windy for him to migrate. After two hours of observation they went back to the station.
It was too windy to go ringing today. So the rest of us used the opportunity to sleep in, which was really nice. After we spent the morning inside doing indoor work, some of us went out for a walk to Batterieskov, Stald Grenen and some other places around. On this walk we found the first Icterine Warbler (Gulbug) of the season which was singing hidden in a bush, but we also managed to see it for a few seconds. Lucas and Andrew also manage to see a Wryneck (Vendehals) which disappeared In another bush. We also saw a nice Pied Flycatcher (Broget Flysnapper), such a beautiful bird!
Later we met Tue and Vigo, our new volunteer for the next week, at the station and went to Ellekrattet to look if we could see the first Red-backed Shrike (Rødrygget Tornskade) of the season which was reported earlier in the day. We could not find it but it is nice to know that these long distance migrants now actually start to arrive up here.
Back at the station we played some card games, Tue won most of the time.
After dinner we went out again. We found some really nice Winchats (Bynkefugle) resting in Storsig.
Winchat (Bynkefugl)
Now Simon and Jørgen Hulbæk will come to pick us up to go out and hear for a Spotted Crake (Plettet Rørvagtel) or some other night active birds. I am curious to see what we will find.
Highlights from the observations:
Fulmars (Mallemuk) 211
Great Northern Diver (Islom) 1
Wryneck (Vendehals) 1
first Icterine Warbler (Gulbug) of the season
