What Day Is It Today?
søndag 28. september 2025
Oops, turns out it’s Sunday today and my turn to write the blog.
This morning Sarah and I (Gabriel) went to Kabeltromlen to set up the nets. Before the first net round, Lisa and Simon joined us, though Simon left again shortly afterwards. Compared to earlier in the week, we didn’t have that many birds in the nets today. Among others, we ringed several Goldcrests (Fuglekonger), a couple of Chiffchaffs (Gransangere), Blue Tits (Blåmejser), and Great Tits (Musvitter), as well as Sarah’s personal favorite — a Treecreeper (Træløber). Lisa taught us how to age the passerines we caught today through skull ossification. The Coal Tits (Sortmejser) have also dropped off now. This week we caught very few, and today none at all.

Miles, Amira, and Florian did migration count at World’s End III today. In general, the migration wasn’t very heavy, but they still had some nice observations of Black-throated Diver (Sortstrubet Lom), Red-throated Diver (Rødstrubet Lom), Goldeneye (Hvinand), hundreds of Velvet Scoters (Fløjlsænder), and for us, the first Rough-legged Buzzard (Fjeldvåge) of the season.
In the afternoon, Lisa gave us an instructive skull ossification session on aging passerines. Afterwards, those who didn’t think the sea was too cold went for a swim. Simon and Lisa joined in too.
After the swimming, I personally took a nap that was way too long, but I’m still tired afterwards.
In the evening Sarah made us fish cakes, which were really tasty. Several of us hadn’t had fish in quite a while.
We also welcomed our new guest Otto today.
Now back to my daily tasks here and hopefully I’ll be less tired when I write the next blog entry.
