Amazing Observations under the August Sun

mandag 17. august 2026
af Johanna Veentjer
This morning Mio, Jule and me started with opening the nets at Kabeltromlen in the peaceful early dawn. The sky was slowly becoming more and more reddish, announcing a warm august day without wind.

Afterwards, I walked over to Worlds End III, meanwhile Mio, Jule and Simon started ringing. At Worlds End III I met Jan and Cora to start morning observations. We had some nice observations of migrating waders, amongst others a Grey Plover (Strandhjejle) and a flock of 22 Dunlins (Almindelig Ryle). We also had one Arctic Skua again (Almindelig Kjove).

One more highlight of the day was a very nice observation of a family of Orcas (Spækhugger), spotted by Jan. It was at least four individuals with one big male, and we were all able to observe them. Always such a pleasure to see these fascinating animals out there!

The ringing at Kabeltromlen was rather slow, but the last round came with two young Pied Flycatchers (Broget Fluesnapper), which was definitely a highlight! Furthermore, Simon Sr. also saw and heard a Common Rosefinch (Karmindompap).

In the afternoon Jule baked a cake decorated with a chocolate Long-tailed Skua to celebrate the observation of the two Long-tailed Skuas (Lille Kjove) from yesterday. In the evening, Simon Jr. had a guided tour, where they saw a Treecreeper (Træløber), five Whinchat (Bynkefugle) and two Spotted Flycatchers (Grå Fluesnapper). Furthermore, they also found a young Black Guillemot (Tejst) on the bunker. How amazing these red-orange legs are!

Meanwhile Simon was on the tour, we put up some nets again near the parkinglot at Grenen to catch some more White Wagtails (Hvid Vipstjert). And we succeeded with it and ringed four more first calendar year White Wagtails (Hvid Vipstjert)! We also got company of Magnus in the evening, who will also be volunteering at the station this week.

Now we are all exited for some more birds in the nets tonight, as we have just put up nets for Nightjars (Natravn) and Storm-petrels (Lille Stormsvale). Wish us luck!

Update: We already caught two Storm-petrels in the first round! We will provide you with more information, pictures and the overall result tomorrow!
