Back at Skagen for the autumn season

After a few months away I’m finally back at Skagen Fuglestation! This time I’ll be staying for a whole month until the beginning of October and the first days have already been full of exciting observations, ringing and meeting new people :)
Yesterday night we made an attempt to catch some waders at Cormorant Lake (Skarvsøen). Unfortunately, the waders were not very cooperative and we didn’t catch anything, but it was still a nice way to spend the evening out in the field and get to know other volunteers.
This morning we had to say goodbye to Simon Jr., who headed home. As one of our regular visitors and a familiar face at the station, we’re sure it won’t be long before we see him back in Skagen again though.
Around 5 am Jule and I headed to the nets and Simon joined us a little later. We had a great morning with a nice diversity of species, catching 29 new birds and 5 recaptures. My personal highlights were a first-year male Yellowhammer (Gulspurv) and a Spotted Flycatcher (Grå Fluesnapper).

Meanwhile, Mio was out doing the migration count. Migration was rather slow today, but there were still some nice observations, including a Little Stint (Dværgryle), an Arctic Skua (Almindelig Kjove) and a Sedge Warbler (Sivsanger). Just five minutes before the end of the count, a Sparrowhawk (Spurvehøg) came in to land, which was a nice surprise. After returning to the station, Mio and I worked on the data together and later he went out again to put a recorder out at Batteriskoven.
Later in the day, we welcomed our new guests to the station. Jule also prepared lunch for everyone and after a short evening meeting, we started getting ready for night catching around the lighthouse.
Tonight we are hoping for some special visitors in the nets... Let’s see what the night brings!
