Bird Games and Sweet Rewards

Today I got up early again to open the nets at Kabeltromlen, where Páll was already waiting for me to help me out. Jule also joined for the first ringing round and we had a good variety of birds. A Robin (Rødhals) was already waiting for us in the nets while we were opening them which was a nice start to the morning.
We caught 19 new birds in total, including a Blue Tit (Blåmejse), a lot of Blackcaps (Munk), Common Whitethroats (Tornsanger).... and a Dunnock (Jernspurv) which was definitely our highlight for today.
Between the ringing rounds Simon suggested to play the “Migration Game”. It was a really fun way to understand more about the a bird's life cycle and how different species use moult strategies :)
Mio spent the morning doing the migration count. He observed a Great Skua (Storkjove), as well as a Hobby (Lærkefalk) migrating south and then heading out towards the sea. A Black Tern (Sortterne) appeared during the last ten minutes of the count and the Surf Scoter (Brilleand) was still present at Nordstrand.
After we came back to the station, Jule showed me how to enter the data from recaptured birds and their rings. We then had some of the cake our guests had brought for us before we all headed off for a well-deserved nap. THANKS!
Simon had a particularly exciting observation in the afternoon: a Yellow-browed Warbler (Hvidbrynet Løvsanger). It was remarkably early and the earliest one he has ever seen at Skagen, making it the earliest record of the species this autumn so far!!

Our guests have also been enjoying their time around the station. The previous evening, they had a Kestrels (Tårnfalk) around the station windows and also spotted an Oystercatcher (Strandskade). They kindly made some homemade jam for us to try and surprised us with a cake as a gift, which was so great after an early morning at the nets.
All in all another great & enjoyable day at the station.
