The wrong chocolate but the right birds

tirsdag 8. september 2026
af Pauline Nähring

Another early morning started at Kabeltromlen where Jule and I opened the nets at 6:00. The nets were quickly ready and Jørgen Kabel, Simon, their dogs Igor and Odin, our guests and a visiting school class joined us for the first check.

Although the morning was rather quiet we still had some nice birds in the nets. We ringed 13 birds in total, and my personal highlight was a Wren (Gærdesmutte)! Always a lovely little bird to see up close in my opinion :)

Meanwhile, Hannes and Mio went out for the morning migration count. They spotted a Sparrowhawk during the count as well as several seabirds. They recorded a Great Skua (Storkjove), at least nine Little Gulls (Dværgmåge), a resting Black Tern (Sortterne) and a Curlew Sandpiper (Krumnæbbet Ryle). It was a good selection of observations despite the relatively quiet conditions.

After the morning’s activities, everyone returned to the station. Jule made applesauce together with Hannes. It was a nice surprise for the whole team! Afterwards Mio and I went shopping, followed by an afternoon nap.

Hannes and Mio later headed out again towards Nordstrand and Cormorant Lake (Skarvsøen), where they met Knud Pedersen. They successfully found some waders and on their way back, they also saw a few White Wagtails (Hvid Vipstjert). Mio was slightly less happy about the shopping trip after discovering that he had bought the wrong chocolate but at least the birding trip cheered him up.

The afternoon was rounded off with more data entry, cooking and some well-earned rest for everyone. We are now heading out again to try some night catching. Check out tomorows blog
