Nocturnal encounter

torsdag 12. marts 2020

Last night we were out on a night catching, we went at Batteriskoven at the same spot where we caught the Woodcock (Skovsneppe) the other day. We didn't see any woodcock yesterday, but we had a very good observation of a Long-eared owl (Skovhornugle)! We spot him flying when we were walking, and we saw where he landed on a tree, so we went to see him closely. He was high on a branch so no chance to catch it with the net even though we tried! But we get to see him very very close. It was a very good observation, one of the best I have had with an owl so far! Even if we haven’t caught anything it was a pretty good night!

This morning we planned to open the nets for a couple of hours between the rains but when we woke up it was too windy and a very wet weather already so no chance to open them. Instead, we went out at the lighthouse to do some observations. The weather was very variable from wind to rain to sun….

During the afternoon we did the raptor registration witch it consists to summarise all the raptor sighting of each day in a total of raptor (species and number of bird) seen each day. As there is a lot of birder in Skagen, it is important to have a summary of all the observations. In the meantime, that gave me the opportunity to learn about the Danish name of the raptor. We did the summary for all the day of March and from now we will do it every evening, like that everybody can see day by day how many bird has migrate or passed in Skagen.
