Owl pellet & Golden days

fredag 27. marts 2020
af Fanny Rey

Today, Joakim and I went at Kabeltromlen 45 minutes before sunrise to open the nets, Bjørn joined us soon after and then for the first round Simon and Esben arrived. Today was quieter than yesterday, it was also a little bit colder on the morning with some nets who were frozen when we arrived to open them. We ringed 12 birds in total at this site. In the meantime, we set up a new net, that makes a total of 13 nets. We closed the nets around 10:00. Micheal was also out rigging this morning at Jennes Sø and he get very got number of Redpoll (Gråsisken), 28 birds !

When we came back, Esben opened the nets at the garden of the lighthouse. It was very calm during the afternoon, it’s only at 17h00 that we get the first bird and in total we caught 4 at the garden of the lighthouse.

During the afternoon Joakim and Bjørn went at the beach and walked to the tips in the hope of seeing and taking picture of the Lapland Bunting (Lapværling) that we saw some days before at this spot, they didn’t find it unfortunately. Esben and I went to check at the Cormorant colony if any bird has arrived and we saw one Cormorant (Skarver) today ! But it’s not enough to make a cormorant colony... but it is a good start and always nice to see one after many times we went, and nothing was there. Also all from the Observatory saw the Golden Eagle today that is been haging around in the area since the 15th.

Yesterday, we found some pellet of bird near the nets in the garden of the lighthouse and today we decided to open them to see what the bird has eaten and try to identify the species! After analysis we think it’s from an owl, Long-eared owl (Skovhornugle) or Short-eared owl (Mosehornugle) who has eaten rodent (but we need more investigation to find the exact species of rodent).

In the evening after dinner we were playing a loud game "The Telegraph Game" to train not to be shy. Before we went to bed ready for another sunny day.
