Here comes the sun

onsdag 20. april 2022
af Manuel Tacke

Early in the morning, as in the last few days, we are greeted by a brilliant sunrise over the Kattegat. There is a light fog over the areas and warm clothes are still a must, even though it already feels like spring during the day. Hanelie and Robbe open the nets for ringing at 5:15am, Alice and Manuel joined the little crowd at Nordstrand for migration counting from 6am and look up at the (somewhat too) clear blue sky.

WhatsApp_Image_2022-04-20_at_19.38.09.jpeg

The bird migration is steady these days, but not spectacular. This allows us to make many beautiful observations, as we can also take our time for individual birds. About 20 Arctic Skuas Almindelig kjove gave great views, as some of them migrate eastwards quite close to the beach. It is also a good occasion to take the time to get more familiar with the different calls of the still numerous Chaffinches Bogfinke and Brambling Kvækerfinke, as well as Linnet Tornirisk and Siskin Grønsisken.

A few Long-tailed Ducks Havlit (and other duck species) can be found amongst the hundreds of migrating Common Scoter Sortand, also keep a sharp eye on flying Red-throated Divers Rødstrubet lom as single Black-throated Divers Sortstrubet lom can be seen daily. The first Tree Pipits Skovpiber (a handful of birds migrating) mingle with the troops of Meadow Pipits Engpiber. Swallows can now be seen every day, today Barn Swallow Landsvale, but still very few. However, it is exciting to see the changes in the birdlife already within a few days. This will continue to gather pace over the coming days.

By the way, the Black-winged Kite Blå Glente is still in the area and thus nice to watch from close range for the third day in a row. This fantastic bird still attracts many observers not only from the region.

Ringing was also done today at Kabeltromlen, of course. In addition to the usual Robins Rødhals, Wren Gærdesmutte, etc., again some Willow Warbler Løvsanger were in the nets. What is particularly interesting now is that you can make a direct comparison between the Willow Warbler and the Common Chiffchaff Gransanger in hand. This is of course a totally different thing than reading about it in books or seeing it in pictures! A few Ring Ouzels Ringdrossel flew over the ringing station and gave nice viewss. Apart from that, the sun has also lured some European Vipers Hugorm out of hiding, exciting!

Data entry and checking the ringing data always takes a lot of time, but that is the only disadvantage of of high numbers in ringings and observations ;-)

We spent most of the afternoon relaxing, birdwatching and doing other things. So, Robbe went to Grenen Camping for some botanical observations. There he managed to discover what is supposed a first record for this region: the tiny and beautiful Crassula tillaea.

By the time writing, the delicious smell of roasted vegetables wafts through the flat and the sun shines through the windows from the other side of the lighthouse now.

Zello calls over zello calls - the Black-winged Kite "Blå Glente" is still around!

tirsdag 19. april 2022
af Hanelie Sidhu
Hi everyone!

Already in the morning, when we were still opening the nets, the Zello calls started: The Black-winged Kite "Blå Glente" is still in Skagen! As we had already seen it, Alice and I were able to open the nets in a relaxed way. Simon and Lisa also arrived for the first round and shortly afterwards Manuel and Robbe, who did the Morning Obs and the "laser shooting" from Kabeltromle today.

At_Kabeltromle_19.04._res.jpeg

The Morning Obs was quite slow, also the ringing. But we had a Willow Warbler "Lovsanger" in the net again, which was nice. Also, Manuel ringed his first bird today, a Robin "Rødhals". The Wryneck "Vendehals" or the Ring Ouzel "Ringdrossel" Simon had foreseen to catch today did not appear. He blamed it on the weatherman and promised full nets for tomorrow. Let's hope Simon is right and the weatherman doesn't interfere. We actually all enjoyed having ringing, observations and observing with the Laser Binoculars at Kabeltrommeln and spending the morning all together. Like that, also Robbe and Maunel had a bit of ringing and me a bit of exercise for my (laser-) binocular muskles. Manuel and Robbe stayed longer with the laser binoculars at Kabeltromle. And there the Black-winged Kite "Blå Glente" appeared again! Alice and I returned to the station, Alice entered the ringing data and then had a refreshing nap, I still had to work on a long raptor summary, then Simon and I started to check ringing sheets. In the afternoon Simon, Manuel and I did some fieldwork for the Raptor GPS Tagging Project. When we came back we saw some Birders watching the Black-winged Kite "Blå Glente" in the field right next to the road in Storsig. Alice and Robbe enjoyed the beautiful weather by entering data outside.

Data_entry_19.04._res.jpeg

After the evening meeting, Simon and I checked a few more pages of ringing data. And there was a new species for the Lighthouse Gardens Garden List: a Ring Ouzel "Ringdrossel". While I'm writing the blog, Robbe is cooking and Manuel is doing what a change today - data entry! Data entry is increasing, but so are the birds, increasing data and increasing numbers of birds, unfortunately, go hand in hand with each other.

For tomorrow we are looking forward to more data, but more than that for more birds.

A new species for our volunteers!

mandag 18. april 2022
af Alice Scalzo

This morning was filled with many birds in the nets. And not only robins (Rødhals) and wrens (Gærdesmutte), but we also got two new species ! So me and Hanelie were very happy to see our first Common Redstarts (Rødstjert) and Willow Warblers (Løvsanger) of Skagen ! We also caught a Yellowhammer (Gulspurv), and a record of robins for the season, 59 robins just this morning !

WhatsApp_Image_2022-04-18_at_15.14.11.jpeg

The first rounds were quite busy with the number of birds, but fortunately we were enough people this morning as Simon, Lisa and Esben were with us. Then Simon and Esben had to leave, they went to work on the raptor project once again. So we continued ringing without them and had a great time. Meanwhile Manuel and Robbe went to Nordstrand for migration count. They got few birds, migration is a bit slow these days, let's hope we get more soon ! But they still enjoyed a black kite (Sort Glente) and an osprey (Fiskeørn) that flew very close to them.

In the afternoon we were all working on the computer. Hanelie and I entering the ringing data, and Robbe working for university. When suddenly... The black shouldered kite (Blå Glente) was announced on zello ! We all jumped on our bikes, well actually Hanelie sat on Robbe's bike, and cycled as fast as we could to Kabeltrommelbakken.

WhatsApp_Image_2022-04-18_at_17.06.19.jpeg

And there it was, sitting on a pole. It was the first time for both Hanelie and Robbe to see this bird, and it was a nice observation too. We enjoyed the bird's company for more than an hour while slowly more and more people came to see it. At the end we were maybe thirty birdwatchers here, with binoculars, scopes and cameras. We Also saw it flying a bit, so we could all enjoy the bird.

After some time we came back to the station and finished our computer work. We had to go groceries afterwards while Manuel started cooking a nice meal for us.

Esben left for the train station in the afternoon, but he, Simon and Lisa had a quick stop to see the black shouldered kite with us.

Simon and Esben also saw a Serin (Gulirisk), a Golden eagle (Kongeørn), and a Black kite in Hulsig.

Have a good evening,

Alice.

Spring arrived for real!

søndag 17. april 2022
af Robbe Cool

Today, I was lucky to take a morning off. Meanwhile everyone except Manuel went to Kabeltrommeln to have another exciting ringing day. They caught almost as many birds as yesterday but no surprises yet. Two bramblings “Kvækerfinke “and a chiffchaff “gransanger” from Norway were the coolest birds.

c5d53649-0d3a-4444-ba5b-f6e14d7d4646.jpg

Manuel went to the tip of Grenen to observe the migratory birds who were present in small amounts, but a white stork “Hvid stork “was a nice extra. He also saw his first tree pipit “Skovpiber “ here. Together with some barn swallows “Landsvale”, he could feel the first real spring vibes. Later at the station, we also saw the first yellow wagtails “Gul vipstjert“ and spoonbills “Skestorke” who were discovered by a kid while attending the open freezer day. This event is an exciting day for some, a disgusting afternoon for others. We showed our visitors the dead birds we collected for several projects and dissected a common scoter “sortand”. A local viper smelled the freshly cut duck and came along to say hello. The duck was out of the viper’s hunting range but he tried to catch a sand lizard instead.b8794005-2d77-430a-bcd2-8265ba3c7b74.jpg

Unfortunately this was only my first moment outside today. I had to do some work on the laptop for the university and for an exciting project about spontaneous vegetation in cities I am starting in Belgium. After the noon, Thomas came to give us the laserbinocular back. Fortunately, we don't have to collect the data manually in the future. In the afternoon, I worked on the raptor project with Esben and Simon, while the others were cleaning. Unfortunately, we had to say a goodbye to our guests who were really lovely again. Luckily, it's rather a "see you soon" because they will come back in one month. In the evening, we had an early meeting, because we booked a table in the restaurant Blink where Mathilde made a delicious meal for us!

We finished the evening with a nice walk before we got ready for a good night rest.

A long awaited busy day at Kabeltrommeln

lørdag 16. april 2022
af Hanelie Sidhu
Hello dear blog readers,
The sunny and quite windless day today - we had a maximum of 3 m/s - brought us many birds in the nets today. And it was really high time for a day like this after we had not been able to ring for about 2 weeks due to the weather. And we had our best ringing day so far this season. Esben, Alice, Robbe and I set off to Kabeltrommeln in the morning and we didn't regret to be so many today as it was - as I said - busy.
 Ringing_KAB_16_04_rez.jpeg
Pablo, a former volunteer and his girlfriend also came, and Pablo also ringed a few birds with us. Michael also joined us for the whole morning and watched us ringing. We had the first Songthrush "Sangdrossel" and the first Redwing "Vindrossel" this season at Kabeltrommeln in the nets. Otherwise, we had mostly Robins and Wrens.
 Dunnock_KAB.jpegDunnock "Jernspurv"

At 11:30 we closed the nets and Esben, Alice and I returned to the station, while Robbe lay in the sun and rested at Kabeltrommeln. While we were very busy with the ringing, Manuel and Knud had a slow morning Obs at Nordstrand. After the observations, Manuel and Knud went to Cormorant Lake. 35 nests are already occupied by Cormorants "Skarv". There are also 15-18 incubating adults. They also saw Anders and Dorte also came to the Morning Obs for a while today. Still, there were some highlights, they had 3 Arctic Skuas "Almindelig Kjove", a Black Guillemot" Tejst", a Black-Troated Diver "Sortstrubbet Lom" as well as an overflying Horned Lark "Bjerklærke" and another Barn Swallow "Landsvale" - spring is finally coming! After the observation, Manuel and Knud went to Cormorant Lake. 35 nests are already occupied by Cormorants "Skarv". There are also 15-18 incubating adults. They also saw 6-7 pairs of Red-necked Grebes "Gråstrubet Lappedykker". After that, Manuel went to the harbor and saw finally the Glaucous Gull "Gråmage". At noon we all met again at the station, then it was napping time for some of us. By the time I got out of bed, Robbe had started entering ringing data and Alice was working on her online tracking courses. I then continued with the data entry so that Robbe could go into town, to the harbor and a pub and enjoy the cheery atmosphere and do some drawing. Manuel continued working on the nocmig today and is almost finished. Esben had a bit of work to do for university today. Anders and Dorte met Anders brother-in-law and a friend after they left the observers. They also had some nice bird observations: they saw 14 Cranes "Trane" very low. They also took a bike ride to Flaubakken and Sandmilen. There they saw a Wood Lark "Hedelæerke". They also cooked us a very good dinner in the evening: we had Paella, which we all enjoyed very much, thank you!

Tomorrow we hope for another good day of ringing, and hopefully some highlights at the Obs. We also have the Open Freezer day tomorrow. So sleep well into Easter Sunday, good luck with the egg hunt, I hope you find lots, wish us lots of birds in return! Take care!

Igen fredag

fredag 15. april 2022

Heads in the clouds

torsdag 14. april 2022
af Manuel Tacke

After a loooong day yesterday, the forecast for today was really not so good: rain from morning on and total fog. Alice and Manuel's brief attempt at morning observation was followed by disillusionment: no visibility, no birds migrating. Therefore a proper zero count for today, nothing can be done. After yesterday, that was acceptable.

 WhatsApp_Image_2022-04-14_at_09.32.03.jpeg

As the early morning remained dry (until 8 or so), we used the time for a short ringing session. Due to the weather, that hadn't been a good idea the last few days, so today we tried again. On the beach and around the lighthouse, thrushes were hanging in the bushes everywhere, including some ring ouzels Ringdrossel. We didn't catch any of these large thrushes (nor any thrushes), but the expected species on site: a total of 25 birds from 7 species (see below). As the rain started, we took down the nets and seeked (warm and cosy) shelter at the lighthouse.

By the way, for those who haven't noticed: Easter is near. And warm and fine hands were needed for the preparations. Because the highlight of the day was: painting Easter eggs with children. Real works of art, right? Well, certainly in parts...

WhatsApp_Image_2022-04-14_at_13.25.06.jpeg

WhatsApp_Image_2022-04-14_at_16.57.18.jpeg

Many eggs were blown out and painted. Various birds (and what birds are supposed to be) can now be found on the shells. A few are now hanging in the garden of the lighthouse, so despite the still cold temperatures, Easter is in the air. Even the Easter bunny stopped by and we tried to find the eggs. Maybe a little late, because headlamps were a must-have... But egg hunting at 22h somehow also has something special!

The afternoon and evening were dedicated to paperwork, which also needs to be done, right?

A long expected migration day

onsdag 13. april 2022
af Alice Scalzo

We were all quite tired from yesterday so each of us left the station at a different time. Manuel was the first at Nordstrand, followed by Robbe, me and Hanelie. There were already quite a lot of people there, we got to meet many birdwatchers and it was really nice to have lots of people around.

WhatsApp_Image_2022-04-13_at_19.53.00.jpeg

We took the laser binoculars with us so we got to shoot quite a few birds today. We stayed the whole day there, through the wind and a little rain, but it was really worth it. Thankfully Simon supplied us with lunch halfway through. Bird-wise it was a crazy day for us! After a full month of slow migration, we finally got a really good migration day! Tons of Scoters (Sortand) on the sea, but also other birds, Teals (Krikand) in high numbers, big groups of Curlews (Storspove), Arctic skuas (Almindelig Kjove), Pintails (Spidsand) and many more! On the land we were equally rewarded, we saw many Hen harriers (Blå Kærhøg) and Marsh harriers (Rørhøg), Sparrowhawks (Spurvehøg) and Merlins (Dværgfalk), Rough-legged buzzards (Fjeldvåge) and Ospreys (Fiskeørn). But the highlight of the day was of course Pallid harriers (Steppehøg)! It was a first for me and Hanelie. We saw more than ten individuals, males and females, and broke the daily record of this species seen in a day here at Skagen! Everyone was very excited about it, also because we saw them many times and very close to us. The Bramblings (Kvækerfinke) were migrating too in the first hours, and we also got to see a few Barn swallows (Landsvale).
Of course, we saw many other species, but I cannot list them all here, I will let you check the link of today's observations at the bottom of this blog!

WhatsApp_Image_2022-04-13_at_21.50.16.jpeg

Simon had to work indoors but was listening to zello and all the calls. So at some point, he joined us at Nordstrand with Lisa. They stayed with us an hour or so to see the Pallid harrier and left. He also cheeked the harbour but there wasn't much to see there.

Our guests, Dorte and Anders, stayed at Nordstrand for the two first hours. Then they left us to try to see the Pallid harriers before us. Unfortunately, it did not work so well, they still got to see a female, but alas no male! We saw them at Nostrand again sometime later. Anders is also preparing a lecture for us, a sea mammals lecture, and we are very excited about it!

Have a good evening,

Alice.

Crème de la crème

tirsdag 12. april 2022
af Robbe Cool

What started as a quiet day turned out into the craziest day, we had so far with the observations we could only dream of some months ago. When I look around and see the other volunteers while writing the blog, I see happy satisfied faces.

It started this morning with the announcement of a bluethroat that gained Hanelie’s interest. While I was still waking up, she made her first excursion of the day and succeeded. When she came back, Kjell, Simon, Hanelie and I started to prepare the raptor catching for today. The goal was to place two nets on two locations in Skagen, one with a stuffed eagle owl, and the other with a goshawk. While preparing the first net near Nordstrand, we got a zello about 6 ‘something’. I tried to find a group of 6 birds migrating over the dunes, but when Hanelie got the translation of Simon during a phone call, she told us they saw Orcas “Spækhugger”! We didn’t hesitate and started to run to the car as fast as possible. We were perfectly on time and found them in the scope. Everyone got really excited when they started to jump around. First one, later several at the same time. No less than 11 orcas (at least 2 males) gave us today la crème de la crème. Kjell was so nice to pick up Marion and she got to see them too! As an extra bonus, we found her first great grey shrike “Stor tornskade” a bit later.

20220412_090330_Moment.jpg

Alice and Manuel as well as our guests Dorte and Anders stayed at Nordstrand to finish the morning observations and the laser shootings. They enjoyed the sight of 3 bitterns “Rørdrum”, a great egret “Sølvhejre” and 12 red kites “Rød glente”.

When we recovered from this exciting moment, we went back to the station to pick up some extra food and books to read while we would wait for the raptors. I took post on a hill near the eagle owl while Hanelie took the goshawk for her account.

946e1b54-efa0-4d90-af91-83c644aa0588.jpg

Because I didn’t have to do anything but wait, I decided to count the raptor migration. I got a visit from Marion and Alice because Marion came to say goodbye. We gave her a wooden goldcrest and a card with a firecrest to thank her for her wonderful company. She has now gone to Aalborg to complete her master thesis. We hope she will find more time to work and that she will come back soon. Alice stayed with me and helped me with the countings. In total, we saw more than 360 birds including 5 ospreys “Fiskeørn”, 3 peregrine falcons “vandrefalk” and 2 black kites “Sort glente”.

Hanelie was not so lucky with seeing the raptor migration but she almost caught hooded crows “Gråkrage” that were attacking the goshawk. Manuel was exploring the harbor in the meantime to find some cool gulls but didn’t get further than herring gulls “Sølvmåge”. Simon, Lisa and Lars did the daily check for the raptor project today. In the afternoon, the guests had a bike trap and found some ring ouzels “ringdrossel” and stonechats “Sortstrubet bynkefugl”.

In the evening we all came together in the lab to learn how to GPS-tag raptors. Kjell showed us on a dead scoter how to attach the tags without hurting the birds.

After a long evening meeting, Manuel could finish the delicious dinner we enjoyed together.

Good evening everyone!

Today the station was crowded and lots of things were happening. Knud was again at the worlds end 3 to support us, also Jørgen Hulbæk was there. So Jørgen and Knud counted the sea migration and Manuel and Robbe took the land migration. For Manuel it was the first time at worlds end 3. It was a pretty quiet morning but that was quite pleasant for Manuel to get familiar with a new migration spot. And there were also some highlights, the four of them saw today around 40 Fulmars "Mallemuk" and a Black-throated Diver "Sortstrubet Lom", raptorwise not so much happened but they had a Peregrine Falkon "Vandrefalk" and a Merlin "Dværgfalk". Also a Pallid Harrier "Steppehøg" was seen today at Grenen but unfortunately our observers just missed it, they had already left for the station again.

Marion and I had to get out a little later today, Simon came to the station just after 6 and an hour later we left with Kjell to look for places in Skagen that would be good to catch raptors for the Raptor GPS Tagging project. On the way we were also at the harbor to see an Island Gull "Hvidvinget Måge".

A little highlight for Kjell, who didn't really expect to see a new species in the few days he was here.  But here it was, very close! Simon also bought new waders in a store at the harbor, now we have two in size 39 and no one has to get wet feet anymore! When we arrived back at the station, a Zello Call reached us that a Red-legged Partridge "Rødhøne"had been seen in Batteriskoven.

We had just gotten out of Simon's car, now we were heading back, Marion and I wanted to see the Partrige. And we did see it and also we met Jørgen and Igor there. Then we finally went back to the station, Manuel and Robbe just came back from Morning Obs as well. And we met Marine and Gabriel, two French birdwatchers who started their long bike tour in February in the south of France, the destination is a Nature Reserve in northern Norway. And now they have arrived here in Skagen. Really sporty! Marion and Alice took them on a tour to some birding spots. They went to Grenen, there Alice left them as she wanted to join us after a lunch break. and from there to Jennesø. There they met Jenne and had a nice chat with him. They continued to Nordstrand and then to Cormorant Lake. Marine and Gabriel were happy to see Red-Necked Grebes "Gråstrubet Lappedykker" there and Marion was able to take really good pictures too!

In the afternoon Kjell showed Manuel, Simon, Robbe, Alice and me different traps used to catch Raptors.

We made further preparations for the raptor tagging GPS project. Then we looked around a bit near the station to find a suitable place to catch Short-eared Owls "Mosehornugle" tonight. We are already excited!

Anders and Dorte went to the Cormorant Lake today. On Nordstrand, they collected three dead Guillemots "Lomvie" for us then they bought groceries for our dinner today, Dorte and Anders are cooking real Danish food for us today! Lisa is also  joining us for dinner and owl chatching.

Take care and keep your fingers crossed for us, an owl in the net would be super cool!
