Another Diver Delivers

tirsdag 5. oktober 2021
af Robbie Lawler

This morning myself and Knud went observing and started off the day with a bang with a White-billed diver (Hvidæbbet Lom) early on in the session. The Horned larks (Bjerglærke) from yesterday continued to show well in front of Wold’s End 3 once again, however, the total number of birds dropped significantly after the first hour. Despite the low number of bird we were treated with a couple of Caspain gulls (kaspisk måge) later on in the session.

The others went ringing with Oluf and Simon but also didn’t see high numbers. After the session most of us went out to look for some Red Crossbills (Lille Kornsæb) near ElleKrattet and we were rewarded with great views.

chiffchaff1.jpg

Unfortunately, another weak Guillemot (Lomvie) was brought to us today, which we have fed some fish in the hope of release tomorrow; fingers crossed for the best result for the bird.

Another day of ringing and observing awaits tomorrow.

A lot of Bluetits and a Pomarine and Arctic Skua

mandag 4. oktober 2021
af Augustin Sticksel

This morning Robbie and Carlotte opened the nets at Kabeltromlen for a busy day of ringing, they caught 73 birds in total today, most of them were blue tits (Blåmejse) and the first Siskin (Grønsisken). They were joined by Angela and Simon, Rosalina came by later to give her first guided tour for a group of university college students from Hjørring, she had quite a lot of fun explaining the ringing and the work at the station to them.

While they were ringing me and Justine were observing with Knud and I spotted an adult Pomarine Skua (Mellemkjove) and adult Arctic Skua (Almindelig Kjove), this was very cool! We also saw the first two Horned Larks (Bjerglærke) resting in front of us this morning.

In the afternoon we had a delicious lunch and entered the data from the day. After that we all went out again to go for walks of fix nets at Kabeltromlen. The new guests in the apartment Eva and Klaus went for a walk on the beach to do some birdwatching in town to go shopping today. In the evening we attempt to catch Jack Snipes (Enkeltbekkasin) again.

Jack Snipe and Chiffchaff session

søndag 3. oktober 2021
af Justine Costa

Yesterday during the evening, Angela and Simon went night catching to catch some Jack Snipes (Enkeltbekkasin). After one hour and a half walking in reed bed with a thermal binocular, they finally caught one!

This morning the weather was too bad to go observing or ringing: everyone slept a bit more and had the time to enter some last data.

This afternoon, we had a session about Chiffchaffs (Gransanger): What species and subspecies can we see here at Skagen, and how can we recognize them. The second part was more about aging Chiffchaff by founding the moult limit.

Chiffchaff_Session.jpg

Despite the bad weather, Robbie, Charlotte and Augustin went out for a walk and do some bird watching!

European Birdwatching Day and Rescued Guillemot

lørdag 2. oktober 2021
af Rosalina Sø Leth-Nissen

Today we ringed in the morning an hour later than usual due to the bad weather. Augustin, Angela and Justine opened the nets this morning. Angela and Justine talked to Cafe Blink about a deal where the station might be able to get some of the nice leftovers they have a couple times a week. We look forward to that.

Robbie and Charlotte went observing this morning and found a guillemot (lomvie) on the beach. It was very weak, and Charlotte carried it to the lab where we let it rest for a couple of hours. Luckily it wasnt injured or anything when they found it, just starving. A couple hours later, Lisa came with some fish for it and she and Augustine fed it. We let it rest and this afternoon it was very happy and healthy, it ate and bit our fingers which is a good sign. Unfortunately we can’t ring it because we don’t have the correct ring for it. We let it go on the beach behind the lighthouse before sunset, and the guillemot, which we named Guillermo, and it swam away with a belly full of handfed fish :)

Rainy cleaning day

fredag 1. oktober 2021
af Augustin Sticksel

We got a bit more sleep than usual today because we decided not to go out observing this morning due to the bad weather. After our breakfast Michel Ancher came by to say hello and pick up some sheets for his ringing site at Jennes Sø. After that we had a lot of time to clean the bird observatory in the morning, we all helped each other out so we were done by lunchtime. Then we prepared a delicious lunch and went grocery shopping in the city.

bananaaaaaa.jpg

When we came back Angela showed Charlotte and Justine how to make gluten free banana bread! While they were baking i went out to watch some birds around the lighthouse, and Rosalina drew some birds on the sofa. Angela is preparing te dinner tonight and after that we will plan the interantional birdwatching day wich is tomorrow with Simon.

Jack Snipes and a Raven

torsdag 30. september 2021
af Robbie Lawler

There was no ringing today on account of the poor weather, that didn’t stop us getting out into the field and seeing some great birds though. Augustine, Justine, and Angela went observing today and saw 3 great skuas (Storkjove) and a few hours later saw 2 Jack Snipe at Strandengssø (Enkelbekkasin). There was a small session of ringing this afternoon in the lighthouse garden.

counting.jpg

Charlotte and I started off a walk at Højen and walked back along the beaches to the lighthouse looking for any washed-up seabirds so they could be sent for examination to better understand the causes of death. On the walk we spotted some interesting birds; including a Raven (Ravn) which showed quite well as it flew off; a very close Black-throated diver (Sortstrubet Lom), and a Snow bunting (Snespurv) as we passed Kattegat bunker. We also spent some time looking for a Yellow-browed warbler (Hvidbrynet Løvsanger) which was seen by Simon yesterday, unfortunately, we weren’t so lucky.

Sooty Shearwater and Yellow-browed Warbler

onsdag 29. september 2021
af Angela Di Pumpo

The sun had not yet risen today as me and Rosalina were cycling to open the nets under the moonlight, but a bright light and a wonderful view welcomed Justine, Simon, Robbie and Charlotte when they joined us for the first round. Even though we didn´t catch many birds today, we had a great time. I feel it helps sometimes to be able to take some extra minutes to carefully look at the birds and improve our measurements under Simon´s supervision. And while we all gathered there at the Kabeltromle a Great Egret Heron (Sølvhejre) flew by, leaving us excited and speechless.

WhatsApp_Image_2021-09-29_at_13.15.12.jpeg

Augustin, on the other hand, was having a good time observing at Grenen with Knud and, lucky enough, they saw another Sooty Shearwater (Sodfarvet Skråpe). I am saying «another» because yesterday Robbie spotted one while observing and Knud took a great video of it flying ad dancing with the waves. If you would like to see the video, it is available on our Youtube channel (click here). But that´s not it! Here below you can also see a picture taken by Augustin of a Reed bunting (Rørspurv) chilling on the dunes’ vegetation.

And while on a walk today afternoon, Simon spotted a Yellow-browed Warbler (Hvidbrynet Løvsanger) at Højen Fyr. What a day!

Last but not least, Augustin uploaded today the recent notcturnal migration counts. If you want to see the numbers from the the 20th of September click here, and click here for the night of the 15th of September .

Sooty Shearwater and first Snow Bunting today !

tirsdag 28. september 2021
af Justine Costa

Angela and Robbie went observing this morning. The weather was really nice and Angela could train herself identifying gulls and count Eiders (Ederfugl). All the observers had the chance to observe pretty well a Sooty Shearwater (Sodfarvet Skråpe) at the tip (see our youtube video) and two Caspian Gulls (Levantmåge).

Augustin and I opened the nests this morning. Rosalina came for the first round and we all trained at ringing and applied the lessons that we had on Saturday to age the birds by founding the moult limit. The last round was one of the busiest with a group of Blue Tits (Blåmejse) and two Lesser Redpolls (Lille Gråsisken).

Redpoll.jpg

During the afternoon, we went to observe and recognize birdsongs with Simon. We saw our first Snow Bunting (Snespurv) of the season! A really good observation for the end of the day !

Søpapegøje og regn

mandag 27. september 2021

Sea birds showing well

søndag 26. september 2021
af Augustin Sticksel

Robbie and Angela opened the nets this morning at Kabeltromlen, Justine and Rosalia came on the first round for the ringing. They had a nice day of ringing today and got some practice with the aging of Munks and Gransangers. They were joined by Lisa and Simon to supervise the ringing. I was out observing and had a nice morning in the field.

This morning four sooty shearwaters (sotfaveret skråpe), two sabine gull (sabinemåge), one leachs storm petrel (stor stormsvale) and three Lapland bunting (lapværling) have been seen on Grenen! A really good morning for observations today. I was out for seven hours for observations and had a lot of fun birdwatching with the local birders.

Michael was again ringing at Jennes Sø where the Lesser redpolls (Lille gråsisken) was dominating.

In the evening the volunteers of the station, Simon and Lisa were invited for a delicious dinner at the blink restaurant at the lighthouse, and in the night myself and Lisa will go nightcatching.
